Corey Brown (F) – Somers Boys Soccer
Senior forward, Corey Brown, representing Somers High School boys’ soccer team, won CPTV Sports’ honor of UChoose Student-Athlete of the Week for November 23rd with 4,793 votes.
After being named co-champion in last year’s Class S final against East Hampton, Somers had one thing in mind this year-round; don’t leave as co-champions. The Spartans, as a collective unit, did not have a chip on their shoulder heading into Saturday’s final, it was more like a boulder. What made things interesting about this match up was their opponent, Coventry. Coventry defeated Somers already twice in the regular season, outscoring Somers 8-1. But this game was different.
Whenever a team needs a point, you go to go to your best player. And that’s exactly what Somers did. Brown scored in the final minutes of regulation to send the game into overtime. But Brown wasn’t done just yet. In overtime, Brown kicked the game-winner into the back of the net to score his 39th goal of the year, a Somers record.
The Spartans went on to win the Class S title, 3-2.
