UNCASVILLE - The Hillhouse-New Haven Academics captured their 23rd state title with a thrilling double-overtime win against the Weaver-Hartford Beavers, 94-83 for the Class LL title.
At one point, the Academics led by as many as 15 points. But the Beavers didn’t let the scoreboard rattle them, fighting their way back behind senior guard KeAndre Fair, who scored 22 points. Foul trouble hurt both teams throughout the game, especially the Beavers, who were without Fair, Chalyn Martin and Jaecee Martin, who all fouled out late in the overtime periods.
The Academics’ leading scorer, Joey Kasperzyk Jr. , who had 26 points, fouled out in the first overtime period, but Byron Breland III picked up the slack for his team, scoring 23 points to help carry his team to a Class LL title.
