Darien’s defense battered Ridgefield in Saturday’s CIAC Class LL Football Championship, sacking quarterback Drew Fowler eight times in a 28-7 victory.
Quinn Fay collected four of those sacks, while his teammates picked off Fowler three times including a 61-yard INT-return touchdown by Nick Green.
The Blue Wave completed an undefeated, championship season for the second consecutive year. They accrued 525 points this season (40.8 points per game). Quarterback Brian Peters finished up with 3,286 passing yards and 34 touchdown passes in his first season as a starter. Peters threw three touchdown passes Saturday, including two to senior Timmy Herget. Findlay Collins caught Peters’ other touchdown strike, a 14-yard score in the first quarter.
Ridgefield’s cinderella-type season, clinching a playoff spot with a 7-3 record on Thanksgiving and advancing to the finals despite being a No. 7 seed, finished with a loss despite senior quarterback Drew Fowler’s best effort to end it with a state title victory. Fowler was 22/46 for 277 yards and a touchdown pass to Shane Palmer.
