UNCASVILLE - Heading into Class S final, the No. 3?Canton Warriors?(19-5) were 0-3 all-time in state title games. Saturday morning, they captured the program’s first title with a 64-51 victory against the?back-to-back defending champions, the No. 1 Thomaston Golden Bears (23-1).
The Golden Bears, looking for their third consecutive Class S title, trailed by 13 midway through the third quarter, a deficit that proved to be too much to overcome. The Warriors’ Abigail Skinner (13 points and 10 rebounds), Emily Briggs (18 points) and Margaret Treacy (25 points) combined for 56 of Canton’s 64 points.
Treacy said her team carried the momentum from its 43-34 semifinals victory against Bolton into this showdown against an opponent that has dominated Class S for the past two seasons.
“We knew that anything was possible,” Treacy said.
Treacy said her teammates knew that if they all worked together, their chances of beating the Golden Bears were high.
Junior Julia Quinn scored a team-high 17 points on 6-of-19 shooting for the Golden Bears. Thomaston finished the game shooting 32 percent from the field (18-of-55).
