UChoose Student-Athlete of the Week March 16, 2015

Emily Briggs – Canton girls basketball
The sophomore guard played a large role in Canton’s run to its first Class S final since 1999. She had a game-high 23 points in Friday’s 52-42 semifinal victory over Notre Dame-Fairfield. Monday, Emily had 27 points and 11 rebounds in a 63-52 quarterfinal win over Old Lyme. Canton meets Thomason in the final next weekend at Mohegan Sun Arena on CPTV Sports.

Tyler Criscuolo – Branford boys hockey
The senior forward had two goals and assist in a 3-2 CIAC Division II quarterfinal win over Farfield Warde/Ludlowe. It’s the first time in three years that Branford has reached the semis, where they’ll meet Suffield-Granby-Windsor Locks Monday. The winner reaches Saturday’s D-II final, which will be shown on CPTV Sports on tape delay Sunday March 22 at 7:30pm.

John Lambert – East Catholic-Manchester boys basketball
The senior center helped push the defending Class M champions into Tuesday’s semifinal against top-seeded Weaver with two big performances. Wednesday, he had 33 points and 15 rebounds in a 82-47 rout of Brookfield. He followed that up 23 points to help rally fifth-seeded East Catholic rally from a nine-point deficit to defeat No. 4 Waterford 78-74 in the quarterfinals

Eddie McElroy – Trumbull boys basketball
The senior guard had 31 points, including six three-pointers, in an 86-60 first-round Class LL victory over defending champion Bridgeport Central (Trumbull was eliminated by Hillhouse in the second round).

Matt Schoen – E.O. Smith/Tolland boys hockey
The senior goalie had 34 shots in a 5-0 shutout of Staples/Weston/Shelton Thursday in the CIAC Division III quarterfinals. E.O. Smith meets Shepaug-Litchfield-Nonnewaug in the semis next Tuesday. The winner plays in the D-III final LIVE on CPTV Sports Friday March 20 at 7:00pm.

Joey Tamburro – South Windsor boys basketball
The senior guard’s big week began with a huge three in the final seconds of overtime Monday, lifting South Windsor over Wethersfield 39-38 in a Class L first-round game. It was the Bobcats’ first tourney win in 10 years, according to Derek Turner of GameTimeCT.com. Joey, who scored 14 of his 15 points after halftime against Wethersfield, followed up with 28 points in the 17th-seeded Bobcats’ stunning 67-53 rout of top seed New London. South Windsor meets Bassick-Bridgeport in the semifinals Tuesday.
