UChoose Student-Athlete of the Week: March 2, 2015

Kayla Croswell – Notre Dame-Fairfield girls basketball
The senior guard scored 24 points — 12 in the second overtime — in a 80-74 victory over Newtown in the SWC tournament semifinals Feb. 24. ND-Fairfield lost to New Fairfield in the title game, which was streamed LIVE at CPTVSports.org.

Jen Dawson – Morgan-Clinton girls basketball
The senior guard/forward and captain had 22 points and 10 rebounds as unbeaten Morgan-Clinton beat three-time defending champion Cromwell 53-52 Feb. 27 in a game seen LIVE on CPTV Sports. It was the first conference title since 2006 for Morgan (22-0).

Anthony Falbo – Newtown wrestling
The sophomore won his second State Open title Feb. 28, pinning his opponent 43 seconds into the 170-pound championship match. Falbo, who won at 152 last year as a freshman, was named the Open’s outstanding wrestler as Newtown won the team title for the first time. The finals will be shown on CPTV Sports Monday March 2 at 7:00pm.

Lexi Harney – Branford/East Haven/North Branford girls hockey
The senior forward scored four goals in a 7-3 SCC Division II tournament semifinal win over West Haven Feb. 23. The co-op went on to win the tournament title Feb. 25, defeating Hand-Madison, 2-0.

Alex Ostberg – Darien indoor boys track
The Stanford-bound senior won the 2-mile run at the New England regional meet in Boston Friday. His time of 9:00.58 is the best in the nation this year, according to the New Haven Register’s Mary Albl.

Brian Riley – Fermi-Enfield-East Granby-Stafford boys hockey
The senior forward scored a hat trick, including two goals in the third period and the winner in overtime, as the Falcons beat Bolton-Coventry-Rockville-RHAM 5-4. Fermi was trailing 4-1 entering the third period.

SWC girls basketball final:
New Fairfield 58, Notre Dame-Fairfield 50

Emily Farrell scored 18 points and Kristen Teklits 15 as New Fairfield High defeated Notre Dame-Fairfield 58-50 in the South-West Conference girls basketball tournament championship game Feb. 26 at Newtown High. The game was livestreamed at CPTVSports.org; the broadcast premiere is Saturday Feb. 28 at 7 p.m.

New Fairfield (22-1) trailed by five in the third quarter before Farrell and Teklits took charge. Teklits scored all her points in the second and the two combined to go 8-for-12 at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

Taylor Ceballos had 13 points to lead Notre Dame (18-5). Read the game story by Richard Gregory of the Danbury News-Times here.

NVL girls basketball final: Torrington 56, Holy Cross 55

Torrington High held Holy Cross-Waterbury scoreless in the final two minutes as the Raiders held on for a 56-55 win over the Crusaders in the Naugatuck Valley League girls basketball tournament championship game played Feb. 25 at Sacred Heart High in Waterbury. The game was live-streamed at CPTVSports.org; the broadcast premiere is Saturday Feb. 28 at 9:00pm.

Tournament MVP Brie Pergola (18 points) scored Torrington’s last four points at the free-throw line.

Rashana Siders had 22 points for Holy Cross (20-2).
