Sophomores Joe Accousti (152 pounds) and Anthony Falbo (170) won individual titles to lead Newtown High to its first CIAC State Open title Feb. 28 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. CPTV Sports was there and will show the broadcast premiere Monday March 2 at 7 p.m.
Falbo won a State Open title for the second year in a row and was voted Most Outstanding Wrestler. The previous two weeks, Newtown won its first South-West Conference title and took the Class LL meet for the second year in a row.
Also scoring team points for Newtown: James Leuci (138) third place; Luca Crudo (113), Ed Lovely (126) and Andy Hubina (195) fourth; Connor Lemay (160) sixth.

The Hillhouse-New Haven boys and Tolland girls won the team titles at the CIAC State Open indoor track meet Feb. 21 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. CPTV Sports was there and will show the broadcast premiere Wednesday Feb. 25 at 7 p.m.
It was Hillhouse’s first state indoor title since 1997. The Academics were led by senior Shawn Fletcher, who won the 55-meter hurdles in 7.1 seconds. Hillhouse, which edged Weston 43-40 for the title, placed in the top three in four events.
Hillhouse also won the SCC and Class L titles. It was the first time the Academics swept all three indoor titles.
The Tolland girls edged defending champion Wilbur Cross by two points to win their first title. Cross, led by anchor Danae Rivers, won the 1,600 relay, the final event, but Tolland finished third to clinch the title. Tolland scored in six events, including a victory in the sprint medley relay.
Rivers also won the 1,000 (2:56.95), 1,600 (4:54.68).

Danbury High won the Class LL title on the second day of the CIAC Cheerleading championships March 8 in New Haven. CPTV Sports was there and will show the broadcast premiere Tuesday March 11 at 7:30pm.
