College football: Amherst 33, Wesleyan 30 (OT)
October 19, 2014
Amherst’s Phillip Nwosu kicked four field goals, the final one in overtime, to lead the Lord Jeffs to a 33-30 college football victory over Wesleyan Oct. 18 in Middletown. CPTV Sports was there and showed the game live.
The Cardinals (4-1) outgained Amherst 433 yards to 322. But the Cardinals failed to score on the first possession in overtime when Amherst (5-0) stopped the Cardinals on fourth-and-1 at the Amherst 3.
Nwosu came in and kicked a 35-yard field goal to win it. He kicked field goals of 32, 30, and 41 yards in regulation, the last one with 23 seconds left in the fourth quarter to send the game to OT.
Wesleyan QB Jesse Warren was 19-for-26 passing for 305 yards, including TD passes of 20 and 68 yards to Jay Fabien. The second one gave Wesleyan a 30-27 lead with 3:53 to go before Nwosu tied it. A blocked extra point after Wesleyan’s second TD proved to be costly.
Amherst’s Nick Kelly, who went to Staples High in Westport, ran 22 times for 122 yards and three TDs, including a 24-yard score. Read more on the game from Wesleyan sports information here.
