HS Football: Newtown 21, Brookfield 14
October 25, 2014
Jaret Devellis ran 21 times for 116 yards and a touchdown as Newtown High got off to a fast start and hung on to defeat Brookfield 21-14 Oct. 25 in a game between SWC football unbeatens Oct. 24. It was CPTV Sports’ Week 7 LIVE Game of the Week on-air and online game (see livestream here).
Newtown (7-0), ranked No. 4 in the latest GameTimeCT.com state media poll, led 21-7 at the half. After Brookfield (6-1) capitalized on a Nighthawks turnover for the game’s first TD, Newtown scored three unanswered touchdowns. The first was set up by a Brookfield turnover and the next two capped drives of 86 and 80 yards.
Brookfield got back within a touchdown after a 73-yard drive in the second half, but it was the only score after halftime. Brookfield’s final chance ended when the Bobcats were called for roughing the kicker on a punt with 1:12 left. The play before that, a Newtown player was ejected following a scuffle to cap a chippy second half.
Brookfield could get an opportunity to face Newtown again in the SWC football championship game. It would be a rematch of last year’s SWC title game won by Newtown, 28-7.
