• Tyler Criscuolo – Branford boys hockey
Criscuolo started his senior season with 14 goals in four games. He had 30 going into Branford’s CIAC Division II semifinal March 16 against Suffield/Granby/Windsor Locks (the winner advances to Saturday’s final that premieres on CPTV Sports Sunday March 22 at 7:30 p.m.). Tyler had two goals and an assist (his 16th of the season) in Branford’s 3-2 quarterfinal victory over Farfield Warde/Ludlowe.
• Shaq Edwards – Weaver-Hartford girls basketball
The junior guard scored 77 points in her final week of the season — 35 in a 58-44 Class L first-round victory against Wethersfield and 42 in 94-60 loss to No. 1 Capital Prep-Hartford. Shaq set a Weaver season record with 760 points. She averaged 31.7 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and 4.1 assists, and persevered and took a larger role after key teammate Snoop James’ season was ended by shoulder surgery.
• Kiah Gillespie – Capital Prep-Hartford girls basketball
The Maryland-bound senior forward was named the Gatorade State Player of the Year for the second year in a row and looks to further cement her legacy with a third consecutive state title in the CIAC Class L final against Northwest Catholic that will be seen on CPTV Sports this weekend. Kiah (6 foot 2) averaged 31.5 points and 15.9 rebounds this season. The Trailblazers (23-1) are ranked No. 1 in the state in the GameTimeCT.com state media/coaches poll and 17th in the nation by USA Today.
• Roy Kane Jr. – Norwalk boys basketball
The senior forward, who averaged 21 points this season, finished the year with a 28-point, 17-rebound performance in a 78-73 loss to Crosby in the CIAC Class LL second round March 11. Roy also averaged 14.5 rebounds and 4.5 blocks and was nominated for UChoose Student-Athlete of the Week three times.
• Jeremiah Livingston – Westhill-Stamford boys basketball
The senior guard also earned three UChoose Student-Athlete of the Week nominations. He is averaging 23.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.5 steals heading into Tuesday’s Class LL semifinal against second-seeded Hartford Public (the winner advances to this weekend’s final at Mohegan Sun carried LIVE on CPTV Sports). Livingston led the Vikings to their first FCIAC title since 1989 by averaging 32 points in the conference tournament, including a game-high 40 points in the final against Norwalk as Westhill went 21-0 in the FCIAC.
• Jack Pardue – Darien boys hockey
“He’s a guy who shows up in big games,” Darien coach Chris Gerwig said of his senior forward. “Most of his points (this season) came in games against good teams.” Jack has had a memorable winter for the FCIAC champion Blue Wave (19-1-2), with 17 goals and 27 assists going into Darien’s CIAC Division I semifinal March 18 against Xavier (the winner plays for the Division I title LIVE on CPTV Sports Saturday March 21 at 2 p.m.). Gerwig pointed to Pardue’s 44-point contribution to his line, which has 120 points and which Gerwig belives may be the best one in the state.
Emily Briggs, a sophomore forward on Canton High’s’s CIAC Class S finalist girls basketball team, has been voted our final UChoose Student-Athlete of the Week for the 2014-15 winter sports season!
Voting is now under way for the our UChoose Student-Athlete of the Winter, to be announced Sunday March 22, our second day of LIVE coverage from the CIAC basketball championships at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Emily led Canton to its first Class S final since 1999 with two outstanding performances last week. She had 27 points and 14 rebounds in a 63-52 quarterfinal win over Old Lyme March 9, then followed with a game-high 20 points in Canton’s 52-42 semifinal win over Notre Dame-Fairfield March 13. Emily was 10-for-13 at the free-throw line to lead Canton’s 20-for-32 effort there.
Top-seeded Canton (21-4) will meet Thomaston this weekend at Mohegan Sun Arena in the Class S final in a game to be seen on CPTV Sports (date, time TBA). CPTV Sports is showing seven finals LIVE from the Mohegan Sun.
Emily’s career high is 28 against East Lyme in January.
In the win over ND-Fairfield, Briggs stepped up when Canton needed her the most. From the game story by GameTimeCT.com’s Mary Albl:
Trailing 27-24 in the third, Briggs went on a 6-0 run herself to give Canton the 30-27 advantage. The Warriors led 34-27 after three quarters.
“Briggs, she’s a special player,” (Canton coach Brian) Mederios said.
